Everyone wears a mask. What we see of people on the surface is so rarely what’s ticking underneath. And, in Cortland Hunt’s case, what he’s hiding might just be more than Ian Tanner is prepared for.
Breaks is the story of two young adults coming to terms with who they were, who they are and who they’ll become.
It’s a love story…but a little broken.

Thanks for the lovely birthday wishes, folks. <3
We can't tell you how excited we are to be approaching the end of the first arc with you all!
The next couple of pages are all go! Seems our 'heroes' have been brought to the same spot by fate...
Quoting Cort from previous page "As long as I keep my head down". Looks like if the conversation develops into a fight Cort will have to make a tough choice here. Interesting how he is in a similar position Ian was when he had to chose between stepping up or keeping his head down.
Cortland's going to have to let Spencer at least throw the first punch, and probably call the cops as soon as it connects with Tanner.
I can just imagine it, though... being questioned by the police, "Why didn't you stop him?" "I'm already in enough trouble, I don't need to add more charges on top of it!"
And then he'll end up going to the hospital and apologizing to Tanner, and Tanner will tell him the truth about who called the ambulance for him and why, and Cortland will probably end up angry and say something along the lines of "I wish I hadn't saved you before Spencer laid you out on the ground to die, then," and cause more drama.
(I know the story is basically set in stone, and I haven't seen it, and I hope that it's not this angst-ridden in reality.)
@Kyle H: (oh, and one other thing: "Why didn't you stop him?" "Because I wanted to be sure the courts could actually charge him with something. He's been terrorizing our school, and he's been harassing me, and I couldn't do anything about it then but I can now." "Wow, that's cold -- letting a friend get hurt because you want to play politics to get Cortland in trouble." "Cortland's that much of a pain in everyone's ass. Yeah, it's a bit cold, but I also had a bit of a beef with something Tanner did and this satisfies it.")
Oh, that eye
Cortland's wide-eye-through-the-fence thing is killer. The way he reacts to Ian's pushing away from Spencer is just... Magnificent. Your drawings are spot on with what Malin's dialogue is trying to convey. You guys are just so damn good at this.
