Everyone wears a mask. What we see of people on the surface is so rarely what’s ticking underneath. And, in Cortland Hunt’s case, what he’s hiding might just be more than Ian Tanner is prepared for.
Breaks is the story of two young adults coming to terms with who they were, who they are and who they’ll become.
It’s a love story…but a little broken.

So I found this comic more or less two weeks ago and it has immediately become one of my absolute faves. The art makes me want to sob a bit. The chars make me want to sob a lot. Yeah I'm just gonna sob.
Bless the both of you for making Mondays so much better and lots of virtual hugs and virtual cookies for Emma! <3
I assume, the next three pages will get gradually more unpleasant.
Cort might even suddenly understand why he had this weird "dream" of kissing Ian. Ian is definitely in deep shit and he doesn't even fully know it yet.
Oh god oh god oh god OH GOD
So here's my read -- he feels so SMALL. Looking down on high, he's curled up and trying to be unseen, safe, guarded.
Idiot. Who are you talking to, Cort? Ian, for betraying you, or yourself, for being vulnerable?
He doesn't look angry in panel three -- he looks SULKY. And it's perfect.
Panel four -- Ian's truly clueless, isn't he? Poor chap.
Five -- Cort's STILL NOT MAD. He's not mad. He's so goddamned hurt, and you NAILED the expression, Emma. Malin, your dialogue here is tight and I can HEAR their voices, back and forth, bicker, bidding for attention, begging please please please connect with me don't let this be fucked up don't don't don't --
Last panel, and Ian is STILL trying to be lighthearted, and then comes that haymaker of a line.
Cort doesn't even look hurt, there -- he just looks TIRED.
My heart breaks EVERY SINGLE TIME I come visit these pages -- when it's good for them, because I know it's about to go badly. When it's bad for them, because I want it to be good.
Masterful storytelling, ladies. You're fucking geniuses, and I love that you share this with us.
@CatastropheJones: Ah! It's great to see you comment again, hon. Welcome back! More emotion with a side order of pain for you :D
I always love your page readings...and yes. Hurt. He's so hurt. And yes, a large part of that idiot is at himself, not anyone else. Because turning rage inward is what makes a person go and break their hand on a wall. Spence had no idea what he was provoking back at the school dance way back when!
@EmmaVieceli: I eat these pages right up, I swear.
I figured Cort was bashing on himself, because he just can't really blame anyone else, either from past feelings of guilt or god knows what (betcha it has something to do with that flashback) and at some point, it will all come down to punching or kissing (or both) !
I stay away only because I love to read more than a page at a time, but I hate staying away because I LOVE THIS STORY.
