Everyone wears a mask. What we see of people on the surface is so rarely what’s ticking underneath. And, in Cortland Hunt’s case, what he’s hiding might just be more than Ian Tanner is prepared for.
Breaks is the story of two young adults coming to terms with who they were, who they are and who they’ll become.
It’s a love story…but a little broken.

And just like that, the moment passes.
You guys are so amazing - thank you for the comments! <3
I know I haven't replied to all of them yet. What works best for you guys? Replies on the page you commented on, or a reply in the update for the next page? I've seen some people do it that way and I don't know what's easiest for you guys?
For now, here's who I missed on the last page:
@Vanilah H: Sorry about your heart!!
@Xrs: Oh man, thank you. So many secrets to be revealed, yes! And I love that this moment has captured that for you. As you can see, they'll both be locking secrets up for a little longer yet, but that was so close!
@AngryAngel: Bless you!! Thank you ^_^ And gah, I'm so glad it worked. It broke my heart drawing it. You're right - Ian didn't bail. For better for worse he's seen Cortland at possibly his lowest, and what the hell can you say? As for Cortland, there's a reason this comic is called BREAKS...and he came close there, eh? But he'll take a little longer to crack, haha!
@Joemon8: yay! I hope it's been a good wait :) And, though the moment ends fast, there is definitely more to come. ^_^
Thanks again, everyone. See you next week!
Tanner, you dork. I wonder what he's going to do about this mess. And Cortland obviously needs to get himself sorted out. I can't wait until the next update! Your comic is beautifully written and illustrated.
Ian! Dude! Oh my god. I want to slap him. Someone needs to. The moment was *right there* - you could tell Cort was struck by the fact that Ian was possibly there for him - and ginger goes and ruins it. I am seriously throwing my hands up here. Haha. It would have just been too easy, eh ;) Beautiful update, as usual!
Hello! This is the shy reader from the last time, who usually never leave a comment, but...okay, I love this comic too much. So here I am.
Ian...hard to be honnest with yourself, huh, ginger boy? You're really strong! In one sentence, you manage to say three lies:
-you "heard" about the fight? More like you saw a big part of it but did nothing to help (you could at least have called the police or helped the man who came earlier to visit Cort...but I understand the situation you're in, on the other hand...)
-You came to visit other friends? Yeah, of course, you misssed your class for them ;) we've all see that.
-You imply that Cort is just a friend to you. So...do you kiss all your friends during their sleep like that? ;)
This page is so sweet and it makes me feel so bad for them in the same time...
Ian is piling up too much lies for their own good.
I understand the hard situation he's in, but Cort is also in a difficult position, and he is more honnest and true to himself. Ok, it brings him a lot of problems, but...Ian, you'll have to face the consequences of your actions sooner or later, and I really wish you good luck with that.
I still love those two characters a lot (even if my fav is Cort's brother!)
Good luck for the next update, and thank for this page :) Ian and Cort are so human I can't help but loving them and wishing them good luck.
Hey! This is my first comment here even though I've been reading this comic since a few pages back. I just had to make one. This comic is just amazing. This is something more people should read. I don't know where to start... I really like the art. It looks unique and complete (in a way that you've found you're own style) (sorry if my wordings are weird I hope I get across what I'm trying to say). The characters and story are so realistic plus the way you draw and write the story helps it make it more real and get the characters' feelings across to the readers. All in all I believe this is a completely amazing work a 10/10. I'm really looking forward to how this story unfolds!
Okay, so I'm gonna babble, because apparently I miss my Lit classes.
From the very first -- with Ian trying to give Cort some measure of dignity (it's not that you're wounded, it's just the floor, you see), to that moment where we're all hoping they just fall into eachother's arms on purpose (it'd be too short of a comic!) I see Ian backpedaling not only from his own feelings, but god, that LOOK in Cortland's eye -- "You're here for..." (WHAT A FUCKING FRAME, EMMA, I WOULD KILL TO BE ABLE TO CONVEY THAT DEPTH!)
No shock on Cortland's face. No surprise, or disgust. No worry. No smirk. No masks. Just open.
And then Ian *flinches*, hands up, like Cortland's naked gaze is a weapon.
He'll hate himself for that, later.
The way Cortland's face tightens around the eyes, then -- the contrast between that and the previous frame -- is So. Well. Done.
So what I want to know is: What happened, Ian? Cortland's obviously damaged -- it's out there for everyone to see. He makes people deal with it with his arrogance and anger.
Ian's hiding his. He's hiding it somewhere small and dark and he's turned it into something sharp and agonizing. Only people who have been witness to something indescribably brutal would turn away from *someone else's* vulnerability.
Well gosh dang, they just need to be honest with each other! But then that would totally BREAK their character XD See what I did there!?! I think I'm funny. I'm totally excited to see more as always ^-^
