Everyone wears a mask. What we see of people on the surface is so rarely what’s ticking underneath. And, in Cortland Hunt’s case, what he’s hiding might just be more than Ian Tanner is prepared for.
Breaks is the story of two young adults coming to terms with who they were, who they are and who they’ll become.
It’s a love story…but a little broken.

Awesome job. I wonder what's going to happen. I wouldn't care to much what the other user said about it being too convenient. It's not really. You played it out in a way that makes sense and Cortland was way to busy with his phone to notice anyone else. Besides, it's not like the other guy is moving around enough to make a whole bunch of noise. Can't wait for the update!
@BurstThrough: Hello! Haha, you're right. It's pretty convenient for Mike to have that info, but what he's overheard is a pretty natural conversation. He was in the right place at the right time, it seems...and I think the fact that Cortland doesn't notice someone else in the hallway speaks volumes for his attitude. He lives in his own bubble and probably doesn't much care who's around unless it's a crowd that could generate a threat. He probably wouldn't even recognise Mike if he looked. As far as Cortland knows, the only threat in the school is from Spencer. And, even there, we've seen that Cortland seems to consider himself untouchable...
So yep - it's pretty convenient, or maybe just pretty stupid on Cortland's part. But the main thing is for the readers to get the connection that Cortland isn't seeing. Which I'm guessing happened ;)
@Evanescent-Penumbra: Aww, thank you ^_^ I'm glad it does make sense. If I'd been less lazy I'd have drawn more pupils in the corridor, but - honestly - cortland's the sort of person who may be more prickly in a crowd, but when he's alone with one person in a corridor, he probably feels too confident in his own abilities to let himself worry, even if he knew someone was there. Stupid boy, eh? XD
I don't think it's 'too convenient' at all, it sounds very natural to me. One of the many things I love from Breaks is that the script flows well and sounds natural!
I'm really liking Cortland, I love how his mood flows from one end of the spectrum to the other within moments!! xD
@chaos-of-vinnie: haha, I'm taking comments into account and I think when we compile for the book, I may move poor Mike back a little. I'd wanted to make it clear he was listening, but I suspect I overshot it :D
@EmmaVieceli: I just re-read these pages, and I always thought that the woman in the pages looked oddly like the school nurse, but I never managed to make the connection! Than you for clarifying that Harvey is dating her!
